The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
